10 Years of Simon’s Cat! 10 Memorable Moments!
1. The Beginning
First there was Simon, a boy from Leighton Buzzard who loved two things, cats and drawing. This boy grew up to be Simon Tofield, an animator by trade and an owner of four kitties, Maisy, Hugh, Jess and Teddy. Real life experience and a will to animate digitally led to the first Simon’s Cat film!
Here is the story in Simon’s own words.!
2. Cat Man Do
Black cat Hugh, one of Simon’s real cats, was the main inspiration behind the first Simon’s Cat film – Cat Man Do !
Hugh, as a kitten used to climb all over Simon to ask for food and one of his tricks was to turn up early in the morning and wake him up by sucking his ear. Simon thought it funny and a cool story to animate for his first foray into digital animation. That film went viral and led to the launch of our official YouTube channel!
After the films came the books. The very first book was published back in 2009 – ‘Simon’t Cat in his very own book’ was an immediate success and 8 more books followed! Now available in over 27 countries worldwide they have sold more than 1.7 million times.
4. Charity and Cats Protection
Since a lot of Simon’s real cats are rescues, coming mostly from his local Stray Cat Rescue charity, Simon and the team are very sensitive when it comes to cat issues and adoption. In the past Simon’s Cat collaborated with RSPCA for their ‘Give Animal A Voice’ campaign while in 2013 Simon Tofield was honored to be invited to decorate a giant statue of Aardman’s Gromit for their children’s charity The Grand Appeal!
Since our first visit in 2014 at the HQ of leading UK charity Cats Protection we have launched an ongoing partnership with them that led to a series of Simon’s Cat Logic films, increased awareness for cat adoption issues and helped with fundraising events. We have also been sponsoring a cat pen – current resident the adorable Benji! Find out more HERE.
After a successful crowdfunding campaign in 2014 to make a longer film, ‘Simon’s Cat: Off to the Vet’ became the first 12 minute Simon’s Cat film to be produced in full colour. This wouldn’t be possible without all our Indiegogo supporters to whom we want to extend a huge Thank You!
