The Future

Simon’s Cat will soon celebrate it’s 10-year anniversary. Has the character changed over time?

When I started drawing the cat it was very rough and ready, the character has developed over the years and is now much stronger. I think all cartoon characters go through years of development until they settle on the final look.

How will your character celebrate it’s 10th anniversary?

Simon’s Cat will probably celebrate his 10th birthday by having a secret party at night in the garden with all the animals from the area.

Do you get tired of drawing a cat all the time? What other projects currently occupy your thoughts?

It’s all about Simon’s Cat at the moment. I am still enjoying drawing the cat and if I get bored I always bring in a whole host of other characters. I have a huge passion for birds too but I deal with this by combining the two together and bringing them into Simon’s Cat.

Have you ever thought about a “Simon’s Cat” movie? Who would be the antagonist?

We did complete our first full color film (12 min) Off to the Vet’. For a feature film maybe one day but it will need a lot of thinking and working out. Simon’s Cat has made a lot of ‘enemies’ in the books so he would have a lot of antagonists to choose from in a longer film.

Simon’s real cats are always around to help Simon with his work!

What advice would you give yourself if you could travel back in time?

Don’t worry. Things will work out okay.

What advice would you give to anyone just starting out as a creator or anyone struggling with their work?

Go with your gut feeling. Stick with what you are familiar (for me it was cats and animation). Try to incorporate other personal interests into your current work, combine the things you love. You never know what you will produce. Keep a sketchbook at all times and keep drawing. Being a good draftsman will always help you in your work.

Do you know that some people believe that Simon is the name of the cat and not the owner?

This is actually a common misconception. The character is simply known as ‘Simon’s Cat’. The cat doesn’t have a name because in this way it becomes everyone’s cat.

How many cats do you have?

Four cats. Their names are  Poppy, Lilly, Maisy and Teddy.

Do you have a favorite?

Not really, I love all of them. They all have such different personalities. Poppy and Lilly are quite new to the family and are settling in really well.

Which one is the main inspiration behind Simon’s Cat?

I used to have a big black cat called Hugh, he was the one who game me the idea for the first film when he was a tiny kitten. He used to wake me up for food.

How many cats are too many?

I am not sure how many cats are too many. As long as they are happy, that’s the main thing.

Hugh, the main inspiration behind Simon’s Cat!
