Lil BUB’s Facebook biography explains that BUB “has many unique characteristics that make her a very special one of a kind critter. Please understand that she was NOT bred to be this way. BUB was the runt of an otherwise healthy litter from a stray outdoor mother, and was born with several genetic mutations that make her special.”
BUB’s conditions are very unique – “BUB is a “perma-kitten”, which means she will stay kitten sized and maintain kitten-like features her entire life. She is also a dwarf, which means her limbs are disproportionately small relative to the rest of her body. She has very short, stubby legs and a weird, long, serpent-like body. Her lower jaw is very short compared to her upper jaw, and her teeth never grew in (yes, that’s right, she’s toothless!), which is why her tongue is usually hanging out. Don’t worry, BUB has a very healthy appetite and eats dry and wet food with no problems. Additionally, BUB is a polydactyl cat, meaning she has extra toes, and in her case, one extra toe on all of her four paws. Her front paws each have two opposable thumbs. And then of course there are her big, bulging, wonder-filled green eyes. Some think she can see into the future with those things.”
“Her foster family had a hard time finding her a home, but she now lives happily with a dude that feeds her only the best food and treats her like a queen.”
BUB’s ‘dude’, Mike, explains how they came to meet – “BUB was discovered by my friend’s boyfriend’s mother in rural Indiana. She was born the runt of a healthy feral litter, and was born different than her siblings. This lady, Lori Klein, took her in and bottle fed her until she was able to eat on her own. She couldn’t keep BUB, so my friends tried to find her a home. They sent me a photo and it was love at first sight. I came over to meet her and took her home ten minutes later. When I first picked her up I just looked at her weird little face and said “Hey BUB!” Also she is very little, that’s where the “Lil” came from. I just call her BUB though. She was 8 weeks old and weighed 6 ounces!”
Simon’s Cat Asks…
SC: Where’s your favourite place to sleep?
Lil BUB: My favorite place to sleep is anywhere that I happen to fall asleep really. It highly depends on what time of day it is, and what’s going on. For example, after my morning meal (you people call it “breakfast i think) I like to waddle over and climb into my dude’s lap. I then proceed to clean my feet and promptly fall asleep in his lap. After my evening meal (you people call it “dinner” or “supper” not sure what the difference is) I will do the same thing actually. Then when it’s time for bed I sleep beside my dude’s head on my magic green blanket.
SC: What about your favourite toy BUB?
Lil BUB: My favorite toy is my mind. But on the other hand a mind is not a toy. Now I’m confused. This game is fun!
SC: What would you say your most annoying habit?
Lil BUB: I can’t seem to get my paws clean enough. No matter how much I scrub them with my remarkable tongue I can’t get them white enough. But seriously, I am the least annoying cat on the planet.
SC: And your most lovable trait?
Lil BUB: Oh well I don’t know. It’s a little embarrassing and self-indulgent to have to name my own most lovable trait. So I’ll go with modesty.
SC: What do you consider your most memorable moment?
Lil BUB: I would have to say my most memorable moment would be accidentally crashing my spaceship onto your planet. It’s opened up a whole world of possibilities, and gives me a whole new planet to save. I’d like to thank Earth for being conveniently located in the trajectory of my busted space pod. I love your fishes.
SC: Thank you BUB. It was a pleasure to speak to you!
