About Winston, Topaz, Mondo and Martin in their owner’s own words:
Winston and Topaz (5 years old)
– biological brother and sister, from the same litter and they are pure bred Maine Coons
“He weighs around 9kg and is over a metre long from the tip of the nose to the end of his tail. While he is magnificently large, and has one of the gentlest souls. The first time he met a kitten he was terrified; the kitten was no bigger than his head, but he was frightened of it. He is exceptionally affectionate and in the quiet hours of the night will often wake me up to cuddle. That means he likes to lay on top of me and knead my hair, neck and shoulders and pillow. He usually drools and makes sounds similar to the cooing of a pigeon.
If I go outside and my husband is not outside, Winston freaks out and meows, standing on his back legs and it is as if he is telling me I must come inside right away, so I am not harmed. None of our cats are allowed outside except in a screened in “catio” so they may enjoy the fresh air and watch all the birds and squirrels, but it keeps them safe from the coyotes and other creatures that could harm them.
Winston loves to be chased by his two new brothers, Martin and Mondo and will mew for them when he wants to play. His favourite toy is a small crinkle ball made from yarn and tiny bits of foil. He will play catch for hours with my husband. He will throw the ball and Winston will retrieve it and drop it back in front of him to throw it again. The ball must be bounced off the ceiling or walls though to make it more interesting. Winston does not like how I throw the ball and prefers to play with a feather on a string if he must play with me. Winston generally likes everyone and is very curious.
His favourite places to nap are on huge cat trees we have throughout the house. He is very playful and is more a lover than a fighter :)”
“She weights just under 7kg and is exceptionally fluffy. She acts and expects at all times to be treated like a princess. If she could wear a tiara on a daily basis, she would. Even our vets have commented that how Topaz carries herself and looks upon others, is much like a Queen looking onto her people. She is the ultimate ruler of the house and makes it clear that she is to be revered.
She does like to have her belly rubbed and has now accepted the addition of the two new kittens. She tries to play with them, but is a little awkward. She likes to sit outside more days in the catio and watches the birds, bugs and squirrels. Topaz makes it very clear when someone has displeased her and people who have previously been in her favour (for example, our contractor) but now she has banished, are genuinely upset and try to make it up to her. She did not like the fact that in order to keep her safe when construction has been going on at the house, our contractor put her in our bedroom. That was unacceptable to her and she makes it very clear to our contractor that he has displeased her.
Topaz likes to nap in my office, preferably on highest stack of papers to be filed. We have lovely cat beds all over and she will chose a haphazard pile of papers over a nice comfy bed any day. She has “killed” two printers and is a formidable hunter (which is another reason she is not allowed outside). She is affectionate with us, when she wants to be and makes it clear to me, that I serve at her pleasure (which of course I am all too happy to accommodate)!
Topaz also uses her beautiful tail to entice you. For example, is she wants to be fed, she will fluff out her tail like a peacock and dance in front of you with it. Winston and Topaz both use their tails this way and will fan them out and make them dance to get you to do their bidding.”
Martin and Mondo
We adopted Martin and Mondo from the local animal shelter 5 weeks ago.
“Within 2 minutes of arriving at the shelter, Mondo adopted my husband. He is the softest cat I have ever felt. He loves for his belly to be rubbed, although soon resorts to fierce bunny kicks. When he does this, he accepts a stuffed rat replacing the human arm and proceeds to kick the living daylights out of it. The easiest way to explain his personality is he is very thankful. He has gained 1.5kg since arriving at his/our furrever home and while he has some outstanding health issues, he is happy, playful and has one of the loudest purrs I have heard. He is probably around 1 year old.
He loves to run and play and climb. He does not like being picked up, but loves to snuggle in bed and spoons either my husband or myself at night. He loves to sit outside in the catio and watch the world go by. He follows my husband around like a dog and enjoys sitting in my husband’s study, in a big leather chair as he works. He does not approve of closed doors and will try and open the door especially if someone is behind the closed door. His afternoon naps are often on a big leather sofa in the middle of our living room and he will gladly roll over to expose his belly for a rub.
He loves his little brother Martin and will howl for him if he doesn’t know where he is. His markings are like Tigger from Winnie the Pooh, and he is very pretty.”
“We adopted Martin and Mondo at the same time, from the same shelter. Martin was barely over 1kg when we got him and he was 4 months old. We syringe fed him for the first 2 weeks so that he could gain some weight and he has since started to thrive. He is over 2.3kg now and is full of life. Being the kitten and the youngest, he knows he can get away with anything he wants, and he does.
He loves to run and jump and play. He can jump really far and loves to jump from counter top to counter top. He believes all food that his humans eat is meant for him, especially anything that contains dairy. He will knock the spoon out of my hand when I am eating cereal to get at the milk. Because he is small and black, he likes to hide and jump out at you. It can be difficult to see him and he uses this to his advantage. He loves to jump at Winston and Topaz’s tails because they are beautiful and fluffy. He is also exceptionally co-dependent. He does not like to do anything alone and will even try and jump into the litterbox with the other cats so he is not alone. He loves to be held and cuddled. He is very persistent about this and if you are trying to work, will knock the mouse off the desk, walk all over the keyboard, turn off the monitor and do everything in his power to make you focus on just him.
He and Martin both cuddle with us at night and he loves to snuggle next to your face and has a very loud purr.”
